Love Me

New collaboration project with me and fellow shooter M. Knight. M. Knight is a veteran on the photography scene, and is now getting familiar with the video world.

M.Knight directed and shot the piece, and I worked behind the scenes on editing and post production.

M. Knight and I had a conversation prior to this shoot, mainly just about gear and other tech nerd stuff. He already had this shoot planned but I, like many who know M.Knight, were curious as to what it would look like if he shot a video. I've been a long time fan of his photography because he has such an exquisite eye, strong composition and attention to detail.

A couple weeks later, photos from the session started making their way around social media and it looked like it was another successful shoot in the books. But there was no video, so I asked him how it went. He hadn't started working on the edit at that point. I was inspired by how the images turned out and thought this would be the time for a little collaboration to take place. So he passed me the raw footage and as I was looking through it, I started to get a vision for it.

Everything was technically sound and well lit so it didn't need a ton of correction. This meant I could focus my attention on the pace, tone, and mood of the piece. It already had some vintage elements to it with what M.Knight calls a "Lisa Raye x Jessica Rabbit hybrid".

Personally, I'm a fan of symbolism and metaphorical elements in films, even when there's not a true narrative present. In this case, I graded it to help reinforce the classic style elements of the wardrobe and make up by bringing out the warm tones you often see in films from the 80s. The location's colors along with the red wardrobe choices and other red touches are what inspired that look, and of course red is the color of passion.

Collaboration is the lifeblood of this game. I can't say that enough. M.Knight and I have been down a long time and this is the first time we did a project together, even though it wasn't planned that way from the beginning. I think we may be on to something though. Looking forward to the next one.
